“Homelessness is a solvable problem.”
We’ve returned from an incredibly invigorating week in Adelaide at the Australian Alliance to End Homelessness’s Leadership Academy.
The major takeaway from this event was that the biggest barrier to solving homelessness is the acknowledgement that it actually is possible to ‘end homelessness’.
Of course, this won’t be easy, nor will it be fast – however there are a number of communities around the world that have achieved functional zero (a community where homelessness has been ‘solved’ and is only rare, brief, and non-recurring).
It was tremendously illuminating hearing David Pearson’s reflections on his Churchill Fellowship report that explores what it would take to End Homelessness In Australia. It will take more than just the charity/community space and a coordinated effort, however this must be an aspiration that we work towards as a society moving forward.
At We Are Mobilise we saw the power of galvanising a community through Nedd Brockmann’s fundraising run last year. We’re grateful to be able to contribute our bit to this movement now with the launch of our Direct Giving programs.
Hearing the first stories of lives being changed as people begin to move into homes makes it all worth it.
An incredibly empowering week but most importantly a reminder that homelessness does not have to be a fact of life that we live with, particularly not in a nation as prosperous as Australia.
