OUTREACH OFFERS TRUST, COMPANIONSHIP AND CONVERSATION TO OUR FRIENDS ON THE STREETS
Outreach is our signature volunteer program. It involves connecting with people experiencing homelessness, offering them some essential items, conversation, and most importantly, some human connection.
How Outreach Began
How Outreach Works
Outreach has three essential components:
Where We Are
Our Canberra operation differs slightly. Instead of walking the streets directly, we have partnered with the Early Morning Centre as one of their service-providers. We have a stall set-up giving out clothing and other essential items, but our approach to Outreach and our emphasis on human connection remains the same.

They are experienced and dedicated volunteers who will provide help every step of the way.

From our friends on the street
I am so appreciative of you guys stopping that I want to write your names into my art - thank you.
No matter how tough things are, you are never given more than you can handle and as long as you can look in the mirror and be proud of who you are, life is good.
My love for painting keeps me busy and positive after being homeless for so long. Thank you for sitting with me, I really needed this today.
From our volunteers
Jac Gray
The stories from our friends on the street are harrowing, eye opening and have helped facilitate a positive change.
At the core, I love being able to have conversations and simply listen to people who may feel abandoned or isolated from society because of factors outside their control, while giving them a safe place to feel heard.
Casey Ash
During my time volunteering so far, I have realised the importance of human interaction as well as being moved by the vulnerability of our friends experiencing homelessness. Their willingness to open up and talk freely has allowed me to grow in confidence, offering support to people in need beyond the outreaches.
Lucy Smith
I enjoy the light hearted nature of the conversations and it has given me the confidence to stop and chat with our friends on the street outside of the Mobilise outreaches.
Jake Borsato
Attending Mobilise Outreaches is the perfect platform to make a difference. I thoroughly enjoy educating myself and caring for others.
The perception of people experiencing homelessness is changing for the better, but there is a long way to go.
Contributing to this makes me feel like I am being the best person I can be.
Elle Tiganis
This weekend I finally put myself in the position to educate myself and take action, instead of sitting around wishing I could do something.
We all have the ability to brighten someone’s day even if we think we can’t help.
Maddy Bartlett
Darren’s enthusiasm was inspiring and his hopes for the future involved applying for jobs and getting back into his passion for cooking. After our chat, he was off to hand out extra meals he’d been given to his friends also doing it rough.
While every conversation we have during Outreaches doesn’t feature so many successes, being able to celebrate Darren’s achievements with him was a really special moment.
Cameron McFarlane
With the majority of the homeless people I’ve met on outreaches, it always feels like they’ve enjoyed having a conversation, it’s just like a conversation you’d have with a mate with lots of smiles, which is incredible attitudes considering their situations.
Aidan McColm
I attend these events because I want to give back to those less fortunate.
Although I was there to show these people experiencing homelessness that I care about them, I left with this incredible feeling of knowing I made someone’s day a little bit better.

No prior experience is needed, just a willingness to connect and make a difference!
Is there a minimum commitment?
No! You can join us as much or as little as you like.
What do I get out of volunteering with Outreach?
Volunteering at We Are Mobilise is a hugely rewarding experience. Connecting with our friends on the street is a small gesture with a big impact, and can have a powerful effect on somebody’s life.
Here’s what you can expect when volunteering with Mobilise:
- Flexible commitment: Our Outreaches are just two-hour sessions on weekends.
- Learn about homelessness: Gain firsthand experience and challenge stereotypes.
- Develop valuable skills: Enhance your communication, empathy, and teamwork skills.
- Become part of a community: Meet like-minded individuals passionate about social change.
- Contribute to impactful research: Data from our Outreaches helps inform solutions for homelessness.
Mobilise are also happy to provide references and recommendations for committed and dedicated volunteers.
Do you provide mental health support?
At the end of each Outreach everybody gathers together to share and discuss the stories they’ve heard. We do also offer free mental health support and counselling through Beyond Blue – please get in touch with us at [email protected] for more information.
I'm interested in becoming an Outreach Coordinator or Outreach Team Leader
We’re always on the lookout for more Coordinators and Team Leaders here at Mobilise! We like to encourage progression and will always support volunteers who are keen to dedicate more time to our cause.
It’s really important that all our Coordinators and Team Leaders are experienced in Outreach and have a full understanding of what it entails. Any volunteers who are considering progressing should attend as many Outreaches as they can, and use that time to speak and learn from our existing team.
Please drop us an email at [email protected] with more information about yourself and your experience. We can’t wait to hear from you!
